The Greatest Cover Band, EVER

You may think I am a calm, centered spiritual individual that plays mellow, acoustic guitar, but you are not entirely correct.
Yes, I do yoga, and I practice Vipassana meditation, but I also sing in a cover band. This is not just any cover band...it is the greatest cover band, EVER! And we get crazy!

Join my good friends Dan Castillo (drums), Brian Roberts (keyboards), Micah Grant (guitar), Peter Freeman (bass), and I every Wednesday night at the Ocean Ave Brewery in Laguna Beach, CA from 9:30 - Midnight. You will have a great time. I promise!

We all dress in ridiculous costumes and rock out with avengance. We also have three dance contests a night in which the winners win a drink on us. Costumes are highly encouraged.

Come down and have a blast!

Find us on all of your favorite social network sites:

If you ask nicely, we may play at your own private party or wedding!

Rock & Roll,

Alec

Move - The New Single on iTunes

I have just released a new single called Move. Back in the summer of 2007, I started working on a new album. Due to taking on the live DVD project, I decided to scrap the album and pick it up at a later time. I could not scrap this song though. It was recorded at Nate Wood's home studio on a rainy night in early January, merely a week after I wrote it. There is a magic in recording a song right after it has been written that I fear would be lost if I were to re-record it at a later time.

Of all the songs I have written, this is my favorite so far. It came about so effortlessly, it did not even feel like I was writing it. I was noodling around on my guitar when I came up with the main part. I felt like I was on to something good, so I turned on my recorder, played through it a couple of times, and basically came up with the lyrics on the spot. I played through it three times, and then went to bed. There was one line I had not finished. When I awoke in the morning, it came to me, and Wha-la! - a complete new song was born.

You can go grab it on iTunes, or wherever else digital music is sold. (I did not actually print up physical copies of this song, so you can only get it online). You can hear a few of the other new songs in their live form when the DVD comes out.

Cyclones and Buddhas

Hello,

This has nothing to do with my music. I am writing about the Cyclone in Myanmar. I have a special interest in this part of the world because this is where the style of meditation that I practice is from. Vipassana meditation is the technique that the Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama) discovered and used to attain enlightenment.

Myanmar, which used to be Burma, is where this technique that the Buddha discovered has been maintained, kept pure, and taught to countless people. Over recent years, retreat centers started in Burma that teach Vipassana Meditation have spread all throughout the world. I have been to two of these 10 day silent meditation courses, and they are incredible and life changing. Much of the music I write has been inspired from what I have learned and experienced at these courses, and they have transformed my life (and many others) for the better.

There are five of these meditation centers in Myanmar, and they all have sustained immense damage and need all the help they can get. If you are interested in helping out, there is a North American collection point set up by the meditation centers. You can send a check to the following address (in Canada):

Myanmar Dhamma Fund
4585 Harvie Avenue
Powell River, BC
V8A 2N9
Canada

Please make your check payable to Myanmar Dhamma Fund, and be assured that the incredibly corrupt government of Mynamar will have nothing to do with this, so you can be confidant that your contribution will reach these centers.

If you are interested in seeing exactly what it is that you are contributing to, then you can visit the following website for more information on Vipassana Meditation and the Dhamma Centers all around the world at www.dhamma.org

***Please pass this on to all of your spiritually mindful friends***

Thank you very much,

~ Alec Bridges

Live at The Coach House DVD Shoot

Hurry up and wait. That seemed to be the theme of the day until about 6:00pm. We all showed up to The Coach House at noon, blazing and raring to go. It was a frenzy of setting up everything from instruments, to lights, to a huge backdrop of a painting that Matt's dad did. Although we were filming at The Coach House, we brought all of our own audio recording equipment, lights, film crew, and we were going to radically change the stage. It was a lot of work. Espescially a lot of work to get done by our schedule film start time of 2:00pm.

The band quickly set up their instruments while Alex Onana and his assistant Bjorn got all of the recording gear set up. We did a sound check and were ready to go. If only the cameras and lights were that easy to set up!

Lights, cameras....no action. The band went upstairs to get our hair and makeup done. I know, such rock stars. Over the next hour, Nate, Jesske, Sean, Tyler, Marriane, and I all took turns getting "visually prepared" by Lisa G and JP.

All this time gone by, and still, no action! We were getting hungry and ready to rock! Thankfully, there was super yummy Greek food that was catered, so we went down and ate. Mmmm, mmm good. About halfway through eating, we were told that it was time to start testing the cameras and to get ready.
We abandoned our food (thank God for the raw food bars I brought), hopped on stage and got to doing some camera tests. This went on for about 4 hours. I was officially
starting to get nervous. We were planning on playing one set with no audience, playing another set with an audience that was told to show up at 7:00pm, and Marriane Keith was to play a set in between. Yes, I was getting nervous. Finally, at around 6 o'clock, we just said, "roll it, we have to start now!". And that we did.

We proceeded to run through the first set over the next hour and a half or so. There were a couple of bumps in the beginning, and cameras had to be adjusted, but it was basically painless once we started playing. We redid a couple of songs to make sure we had good takes of everything, played a last few of the songs for people that started to filter in, let them know that we would be back for the real set later, and then we headed upstairs to the green room to relax for a bit while Marriane Keith played her set.

While Marriane was playing her set, the band and I headed up to the green room to prepare for our real set. We sat in the room talking, being silly, and the whole time, due to nerves, exhaustion, and eating mostly raw food power bars all day, I felt sick. For a while I really thought I was going to be sick, and I was starting to freak out. I had a beer to calm my stomach and we went into a different room and took lots of pictures with the highly amusing Katie Oswald. We got lots of great photos back there. Check a few of them out...

We talked, had fun, and took photos until Marriane was finished with her set and then, we took the stage again. We played through 13 songs in front of the small, invite only audience, of our close friends and family. I'm not going to lie, it was a tiring set to do after having spent the whole day setting up and also having played another twenty+ songs a couple hours earlier, but it was equally as thrilling to be playing for everyone and for the purpose of making this DVD, so we dug deep and pulled through with flying colors.

Huge thanks to everyone that was able to come out on a Sunday night, and to all of the awesome people that came out to be a part of the creation of this DVD. If you want to take a look at more photos, you can head over to Facebook or MySpace to see more. I am not sure when the final product will be out, but I will definitely let you know.

Stay tuned...

Brand New MySpace Page

For the past several months, I have been trying to redesign my MySpace page, to no avail. I have looked through tons of pages that I admire, and I finally noticed something they all have in common: they were designed by Jenny Begin of Star Mile Designs!

Rather than wasting my time with trying to do it all by myself, I got in touch with her and now, PRESTO!, a new page is born - http://www.myspace.com/alecbridges

New Year's Eve With Dick Dale!

Happy 2008! On December 30th, I was playing a little open mic night at Aurora in Newport Beach when I received a phone call from my friend Ken Garica. He wanted to know if I was available to play on New Year's Eve at The Coach House. The first thing that crossed my mind was, "how the hell am I going to sell a bunch of tickets in one day??" (you have to sell tickets when you play at The Coach House).
Before I could say that, he said, "you don't have to sell any tickets because it is already sold out. We are opening up for Dick Dale, and the night needs someone to start it out with a solo acoustic set".

Me: Awesome. Yes.

So on New Years, I rolled up to The Coach House, walked on stage, rocked out for a half hour to a packed house, and then still made it to the parties I was planning on going to!

It was an awesome way to end the year. I am really looking forward to 2008. 2007 was not the greatest of years for me, and there is a lot in store for this year! Including some new songs, and I am beginning work on a live DVD with my band with SongCheck Live.

Stay tuned and I wish you all a very happy new year!
